is used to indicate ranks below 1st degree black sash. The sash colors indicate technical
skills reached by the student; many schools start at white and work up to black. Colors of
sash vary from school to school. Here is a general example:
A beginner who has no previous  knowledge of  Wuzu kungfu.
Starts to show mastery of the basics and can assume the title of “Zhujiao”, or
“Assistant Instructor”.
Shows that he/she has learned the basics of Wuzu kung fu.
Can apply skills accurate and with more control.
a rank of black sash begins with 1st degree and promotion leads to a highest 9th degree.
By entering the DUAN level, a student is considered to be a true martial art practitioner.
The following is the three instructor levels and its corresponding black-sash degrees:
1st Duan, 2nd Duan and 3rd Duan
4th Duan, 5th Duan and 6th Duan
7th Duan, 8th Duan and 9th Duan
Yaodai (Belt or Sash): Used to distinguish the different levels of skill in martial arts. There are two kinds of Yaodai,
the
Ji and the Duan Ranking System.
Can better control the basics; can begin to apply the basics he/she had learned.
When a person first receives his 1st Degree black sash, he/she is considered to be independent of the Ji ranking
system, and now can actually begin to learn wuzuquan. Ranks of 2nd and 3rd degrees indicate that a good progress
is being made along the path of wuzuquan. But once the practitioner achieved 4th Degree black sash, he/she is
given the title of Jiaoshi. After receiving this title, a kung fu practitioner will retain this title as he progresses through
the 5th and 6th degrees. Upon completion of his/her 6th Degree, the Kung Fu practitioner is awarded the title
Quanshi which literally mean “master of the art” – signifying their in-depth understanding of Wuzu Kung Fu.
Attainment of this title also makes the practitioner eligible to start his/her own martial art school. Then comes the
last and highest level that a kung-fu practitioner can achieve, the third instructor level. When a practitioner
completed his 9th degree, he/she received the title Zhanshi - a rank signifying his full knowledge of the arts to a
degree of perfection.

There are a few other titles that are given to special practitioners. One is the Dashi or “Grandmaster”; this title is
given only to the most deserving shifus. The candidate must be a person of good character and reputation, must
have trained in a recognized school or teacher and posses an exceptional level of skill, and has at least fifty years of
experience. He/she must also have made a very significant contribution to the art of wuzuquan. In honor of the
Dashi, a “10th Degree Black Sash” is awarded to him. Another title is the Zushi, which is given to the founder of the
art. He/she is the ONLY person that can retain this title. And the last but not least is Shifu, a polite form of address to
anyone who is teaching kung fu; sometimes it may be reserved for the school's headmaster also known as
Guanzhang.
